HOUSE APPROVES $3 MILLION ANNUALLY FOR VETERANS TRUST FUND
3/5/2008
Des Moines, Iowa – On a bi-partisan 75-21 vote, the Iowa House today approved a sustainable revenue source for the Veterans Trust Fund, which is designed to help veterans with job training, medical care, counseling, family support and other services.
"This bill guarantees that money will flow into the Veterans Trust Fund every year. It fulfills part of our obligation to veterans who have put their life on the line to serve and defend our country," said State Representative McKinley Bailey of Webster City, who managed the bill in the House and is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Veterans Trust Fund was established in 2003 to create a $50 million endowment for veterans, their spouses and dependents. Since its creation the trust fund has had no on-going appropriation. House File 2359, which was approved today, will provide $3 million per year to the Veterans Trust Fund. The money comes from the Iowa Lottery, which will create new scratch and pull-tab tickets.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
